WHAT IS DENTAL HYGIENE?

Dental hygiene is the set of practices designed to maintain oral health and prevent problems such as tooth decay and gingivitis. It includes brushing, flossing and regular visits to the dentist to keep your teeth and gums in good condition.

WHAT IS GINGIVITIS AND PERIODONTAL DISEASE?

Gums are healthy when they are pink and do not bleed spontaneously or when brushing.

They are inflamed when they appear red, swollen and bleed easily, not only when brushing but also spontaneously.

Periodontal disease is usually asymptomatic; pain is rarely experienced, sometimes the patient complains only of mild discomfort.

TREATMENT OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE
RESULT AFTER 15 DAYS
approfondimeni

Gingivitis: a proper oral hygiene session with the dental hygienist will solve the problem in a few weeks; the gums will stop bleeding and return

to health. Oral hygiene sessions are necessary to remove tartar, which is hardened plaque that cannot be removed with a toothbrush.

Periodontal pockets (if you have periodontitis): In addition to removing the supragingival tartar, the hygienist must clean the roots of your teeth

as thoroughly as possible using special manual or ultrasonic tools.

Anaesthesia is often required for deep pockets to avoid unnecessary discomfort and pain. It is possible that all or just a few teeth may be affected by periodontal disease and several sessions may be required to properly treat all surfaces.

DAILY HYGIENE AT HOME

As the main cause of the disease is plaque, it must be removed from the teeth every day.

So your cooperation is the most important part of the treatment!

If your gums are bleeding, you must insist on brushing to remove the bacteria that caused the bleeding.

However, the toothbrush cannot clean all the surfaces of the teeth, such as the interdental spaces, which are the most neglected areas and therefore most affected by periodontal disease. Flossing is necessary, but if you have periodontal problems, the spaces are often very large, so pipe cleaners are very convenient and useful.

Depending on your needs, other cleaning tools may be recommended, such as monochrome, super-floss or electric monochrome: the hygienist will decide with you which are the most appropriate tools for your mouth and will instruct you on how to use them effectively.

PREVENTION
As a preventive measure, we therefore advise you to

  • Brush your teeth after every meal;

  • Floss and brush at least once a day to remove plaque between the teeth;

  • Eat a healthy and balanced diet;

  • Avoid smoking;

  • See your dentist regularly (usually every 6 months) for caries checks and regular oral hygiene sessions.

Prevention is better than cure!
And it certainly costs less!

CAUSES AND PREDISPOSING FACTORS

  • Presence of bacterial plaque;

  • Smoke;

  • Inappropriate restorations: fillings and dentures that do not allow the patient to maintain proper oral hygiene;

  • Heredity: one in three people is genetically predisposed to periodontal disease;

  • Pregnancy and other hormonal changes in women;

  • Stress: can weaken the immune response in the fight against infection;

  • Medication: contraceptives, antidepressants and other drugs can affect oral health;

  • Bruxism;

  • Diabetes and other systemic diseases (e.g. celiac disease);

  • Food intolerance.

YOU MUST BE SUSPICIOUS IF YOU NOTICE

  • The gums bleed;

  • The gums have receded and the teeth appear longer;

  • some teeth have shifted, making the spaces between them larger;

  • One or more teeth are moving;

  • You have bad breath.

If everyone with periodontal disease had learned proper oral hygiene when they had healthy gums or simple gingivitis, they would have been able to keep their teeth.

Years ago, people with periodontal disease could only wait for their teeth to fall out.
Now, fortunately, there is a lot you can do!
